UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE

A trusted part of due process.

The Sheriff is not a judge and does not decide the outcome of a legal matter. Rather, the office carries out prescribed acts, such as delivering process or executing orders that have been issued by a court.

Sheriffs in South Africa are overseen by the South African Board for Sheriffs. The Department of Justice also publishes information about the role and the rights of people dealing with a Sheriff.
